Pride - Part I

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18

In this issue of The Prophetic Messenger, we will begin a message titled “Pride.”

1. Pride Is Sin Against God

In Webster’s Dictionary one definition of the word pride is “an overhigh opinion of oneself.” Pride - which is the opposite of being humble - is sin. Here are two examples in the book of Proverbs that show pride is sin. In Proverbs 16:5 it says “Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.” Also, in Proverbs 21:4 it says “An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.” We see an example in the book of Daniel how king Nebuchadnezzer was punished for his pride. In Daniel 4 king Nebuchadnezzer had a dream and told it to Daniel and Daniel through interpreting the dream warned the king. Afterwards king Nebuchadnezzer was punished for his pride. In Daniel 4:28-37 it says “28 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon. 30 The king spake, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honour of my majesty? 31 While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee. 32 And they shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and seven times shall pass over thee, until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hairs were grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws. 34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? 36 At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, mine honour and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. 37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.”

2. Pride Is The Same Sin That Caused Satan To Fall From Heaven

The sin of pride is what caused satan to fall from heaven. In the book of Isaiah, satan is called lucifer and we see the pride of the five I‘s mentioned in these verses. In Isaiah 14:12-16 it says “12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. 16 They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;”

3. Jesus Revealed Peter’s Pride

In the gospel of Mark, before Jesus was about to be betrayed by Judas, Jesus revealed Peter’s pride and foretold of Peter denying Jesus. In Mark 14:26-31 it says “26 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus saith unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered. 28 But after that I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. 29 But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I. 30 And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. 31 But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all.” In Mark 14:66-72 it shows Peter’s denial. In Mark 14:66-72 it says “66 And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the high priest: 67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. 68 But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch; and the cock crew. 69 And a maid saw him again, and began to say to them that stood by, This is one of them. 70 And he denied it again. And a little after, they that stood by said again to Peter, Surely thou art one of them: for thou art a Galilaean, and thy speech agreeth thereto. 71 But he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom ye speak. 72 And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept.”

In closing, it is so important for Christians to be humble and to repent of any pride in their lives so that God can get all the glory.

Memory Verses

As Christians if we want to live in victory and if we want to be able to share the Word Of God with others we must know the Word of God ourselves. Let's see what the Bible says about this. "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." Psalm 119:11. "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." John 15:7. "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed." John 8:31. We encourage you to put the following scriptures in your heart: Matthew 11:12, Genesis 7:4, Ephesians 5:27, Zechariah 13:9, I Corinthians 1:5, Song of Solomon 1:4, Romans 3:10, Exodus 15:6, Genesis 2:24, Acts 19:15.
